AI is already part of our daily lives, whether we notice it or not. It is in our phones, computers, apps, search tools, and even some children’s toys. But as artificial intelligence becomes more common, parents are facing a difficult question: how do we protect children from the good, the bad, and the ugly sides of AI?

In this episode of The Boston Barista, Attorney Kevin Patrick Seaver talks about the promise and risk of AI for children. AI can help with bedtime stories, language learning, personalized education, and creative play. But it can also create real concerns around screen time, social development, empathy, overreliance, mental health, and unsafe content.

This episode explores why AI needs guardrails, why parents still have a major responsibility, and why technology companies and government leaders must help protect children as AI continues to grow.

Transcript: This week’s episode is all about AI becomes a bigger part of our lives. And that means everybody. You don’t have to be a lawyer to be using AI. It’s in everything we do. It’s in our phones. It’s in our computers. It’s even in our kids’ toys. Because it’s in our children’s lives, how do we protect them from the good, the bad, and the ugly, which comes with everything? Let’s be real with each other. When cavemen first started, fire could kill you and also keep you warm in the colds of nights. The same arguments we have today is the same arguments that were made also about the Gutenberg press and the printing of documents. It was the same thing I heard when we first got our computers. They’re going to do good things and bad things. True. Absolutely true. Now we got the internet.(…) Oh boy.(…) And that’s been explained to be good about it and different. And it is. Well, artificial intelligence, AI is no different. Speaking with a woman the other day that had children, she was telling me how great AI is. And I said, why? She said, well, I get to put pictures up of their animals, their pet dog, Sandy, and other things in the background, which gives the children familiarity. And they like that. Now there’s a really good purpose for AI. She also talked about how at the end of the day she’s tired and they get sick of books being read to them. What a nice problem to have. And she needed to make up some bedtime stories. So she had a theme and she went in and used AI to create a theme for her to be able to read to her children at nightly bedtime routines. On the other hand of this happiness plate is the concerns by parents for their children. And there are all types of studies to support whatever position you want to take it. AI is good. AI is just an AI is bad for our children. And no matter where you look, the way you go, you’re going to find that. So where is the modification or the place where we can land to make it just good so it doesn’t harm our children? That’s the million dollar question. I cited some benefits to help with parents utilizing AI. What I hear from parents and everyone alike is that AI is moving so quick, so fast.
