In this episode of the Boston Barrister Podcast, Attorney Kevin Patrick Seaver and Attorney Paola Rossetti discuss the legal realities facing unmarried parents in Massachusetts.
They explain how paternity is established, the importance of signing a Voluntary Acknowledgment of Parentage, and what happens when paternity is disputed. The discussion also covers court-ordered DNA testing, adding a father’s name to a birth certificate, visitation rights, child support obligations, and the role of the Massachusetts Department of Revenue (DOR).
The attorneys also discuss recent efforts to eliminate outdated terminology surrounding children born to unmarried parents and explain why establishing legal parentage is an important step in protecting both parental rights and a child’s future.
Whether you are a mother, father, or expectant parent, this episode provides a practical overview of Massachusetts paternity law and what you should know if you have a child outside of marriage.

I’m joined here today by Paula Rossetti, an attorney in the office as well.(…) Paula, say hello to everybody, please. Hello, everyone. Paula Rossetti here. Today’s episode about the Boston Barristan, about something that has become increasingly readily apparent to all of us, that people are not getting married anymore. But yet there’s a lot of people that hook up and have children that are unmarried. And so we want to talk about the brutal truths of being unmarried with children. Now, I want to begin this podcast today to throw out some bouquet of flowers to a current governor who is in the process of getting a bill passed, which takes away the stigma of a child born out of wedlock. Now, this child who was born out of wedlock did not choose its parents, didn’t choose to be born with parents who were not married. So why, why, why in infinite wisdom are we stigmatizing a child by calling it a child born out of wedlock? And Governor Healy has said no more. I applaud her for that.
