Transcript:
Welcome back to the Boston Barrister. My name is Kevin Patrick Seaver, and I’m located in Boston, Massachusetts. Today’s podcast is about what you should do when DCF first contacts you. The first thing you should do is use your ears, listen carefully, and find out what the allegations are before answering questions. If you do not know the story, you may start guessing, and guesses are not made for investigations. Every family, DCF officer, social worker, and set of circumstances is different, but the law and the need to protect your constitutional rights do not change. DCF may inspect your home, contact doctors, nurses, schools, therapists, and other collateral sources, and review your background and any prior DCF or police involvement. Understanding the DCF process, procedures, time standards, statutes, regulations, and law can reduce fear by helping you understand what may happen next. Parents should prepare evidence, facts, affidavits, character references, and other documentation instead of assuming DCF will see through the allegations without help. Understanding the 51A report, 51B investigation, home visit, and your options allows you to make informed decisions, follow a step-by-step strategy, and act early to protect your children and family.
